The most recent U.S. Census Bureau data shows that college graduates have a huge earnings advantage over those who just complete high school.  This gap grew substantially over the period from 1980 to 1997.  According to a recent analysis of this data, a college graduate in 1980 earned about 43% more per hour than did a person with a high school diploma. Census data shows that by 1997, this earnings advantage had increased to 74%.  Those with a high school diploma earn on average about $41,000 compared to about $71,000 for college graduates.*
